What's Your Favorite Operating System?
  • Mac OS X
  • Linux
  • Windows
  • BSD

Mine would overall be Linux as first, Mac OS X as second, Windows as third. Can't judge BSD because I have never tried it out.

Seeing as this is basically a continuation of the offtopic discussion in the other thread I shall reply here.

Not even Linus Tolvards /hates/ windows.

Windows has its uses, linux has its uses. I guess OS X has its uses as well, like looking nice in the corner.

If more people were developing applications for Linux; it would probably be the best OS and more useful than Windows.

Linux will not be the best OS unless it gets full-blown commercial support, like Windows and OS X have.
I have seen about 5 commercial programs for linux.
Free and opensource software is great, but it really will not be able to compete with closed source software (Although there are a few exceptions to this rule).

Edit:
Also, I love how people ALWAYS think OS X is the greatest OS when they are stuck with windows.

Completely OT but Will you appear to have fixed the hanging when doing POST's

I totally agree with James on basically all of his points.

Whilst Linux may function like a good operating system it isn't simply because it doesn't have the support. Everyone I know who uses Linux runs Windows on it regularly which completely defeats the point, why not just run Windows? From my own personal experience (Not saying that this is you) a lot of people say Linux is their favourite because they think it makes them look cool. I guess it's because it's not the normal thing to do.

As for me I'm not too bothered. Lets be honest, they all do more or less the same thing. Yes they might be different from a developers perspective but not for your average user. I love my Mac but I love it not so much for the actual Operating System but the programs that come built into it and the hardware. On balance I do think that OSX edges it slightly over Windows but it's all down to personal preference and I can't deny that I run Windows 7 on my MacBook as well.

Im a huge fan of windows 7, although I really really want a mac. Just cuz of the sole purpose that I think its pretty. Im wierd that way.

As for me, it depends on the use. If it's for a server then I'd definitely use Linux (Redhat or CentOs) but for a desktop, I prefer Windows 7. As for a media center, it really depends on the applications available. At the moment I've been running Windows Vista (bleh) for my media center pc, but I plan to get something a bit better in the future, maybe a distro of Linux if I can find decent software that supports all the codecs needed with little hassle.

Win7 obv. Linux is good for servers, Windows is good for programming/personal use and mac os is good for designing and editing things like videos.
