I had similar problems with DVI -> VGA to my TV. I think the problem may be that HDMI can carry audio so your TV is seeking Audio from the HDMI input, if you switch to "PC" or "Computer" setting on your TV, my bet is you'll probably hear the audio but get no picture. The way I solved this was by plugging the 3.5mm to RCA jack into the speaker system (separate from the TV) and the iBook into the TV. If you don't use an external box for speakers though (amp, stereo, surround sound etc) then I'm not sure.
Then again I might be completely wrong.

Have you got the sound on unmute?
You'd be surprised how many people have mute on.

No luck yet guys. Any more advice.
@Matt. My 3.5mm jack is plugged into the speaker port on my PC and goes into the "PC-IN" port on my TV. I am trying to get the sound to come through my TV's speakers.

What model & make is the TV?
Matt you literally said what I said, since HDMI can carry audio but there won't be any, the TV will probably search for audio from the HDMI. Gaffa, I doubt it's possible unless your TV allows you to select different inputs for audio/video, try all the inputs on your TV with your PC playing music and I bet on one source you'll get music with no video. Really you need a separate speaker system like surround sound.
