I think that a shoutbox would cut down on forum spam, and we all know there's a lot of that. It may be beneficial but also comes with a hefty strain on the server.

I say yes, with options to choose to use it or not.

All shoutboxes for vB eat both bandwith and server resources
I had a site go up from 100mb bandwith a day to 4gb a day

And what happened to the idea of a private IRC channel, one that's separate from the forum..?
